Friday Photography Live: Conversation with Two Lady Travellers

Caraveo, a member of Spectrum for over 25 years, developed a passion for photographing medieval France to share its beauty and its place in history. Originally known for her hand colored images that invoked the past, through her career she has explored new areas with the onset of digital photography including altering and enhancing digital images and falling for apps on her iPhone. Her early interest in France led her to opening her own tour company La Belle France Tours of which she celebrates ten years of hosting tours of Paris and other regions of France.

Her portion of the show will feature a series of bright metallic prints featuring flowers from Monet's Garden, in Giverny, France, the Standing Stones of Brittany, an image or two of Flanders, and of course, iconic images of Paris. Images will be presented in a range of formats from small glass prints featuring images from her iPhone to larger digital prints. Caraveo is also featured through May 21 at Arte Americas for their women's show Three Degrees of Separation, that she initiated for Women's History Month in 2015, that encourages the featured women artists to refer another woman artist to the show they are close to, enhancing the theme of that started with One Degree of Separation, and also hosted and coordinated the Friday Photography Live! event for Spectrum's women's show Women's Work, the March 2017 exhibit.

Frownfelter is a more recent member of the gallery, but has been photographing since she was a child, taking it more seriously she grew older and started to travel, inspired "to see the 'old country' of Europe with its medieval architecture." After reviewing hundreds of images to use in this exhibit, Frownfelter has new thoughts about her work, reflecting that "Recently, I have thought of the purpose of my photography - definitely for my pleasure, but also, to interpret the holy. And, all is holy, so I begin to interpret my world differently, again."

Both photographic artists have also been inspired by their mentor and gallery founder, Steve Dzerigian, with Frownfelter who traveled to Egypt with Steve, and Caraveo, being a student of his, years ago in the photography program at FCC, and in turn is now a photography teacher there as well.
